Art that reflects life

The artworks of Ramani Mylavarapu highlight some of the key flaws and loopholes that exist in our society.

Ramani Mylavarapu’s art works draw inspiration from life and holds up a mirror to the society — its limitations and drawbacks. She works with an insatiable urge to unveil dark corners of social systems and tries her best to create awareness about them.

Her passion for making socially relevant statements through her work is supported wholeheartedly by her parents as well as her husband.

Ramani, a former fashion designer and a postgraduate in fine arts from JNAFAU College of Fine Arts, loves experimenting with new media works.

Some of her recent works, including a set of three paintings in abstract flowing/dripping colour areas, are presently on display at the Nehru Art Gallery. A closer look reveals forms and images while the combination of transparent and opaque treatment grants the works a mature stance. One of the paintings titled Women and Nature exemplifies the oneness and similarity between women and natural elements.

alking about the other works on display, Ramani says, “Most of my works are installations where I have brought forth issues such as the farmers’ condition, rape cases, preference for fair skin etc. Even my performance for the present show depicts the hurdles that a woman has to face during her journey towards success. I conclude my act by showing her (a woman covered in bandages) breaking free from the clutches of abuse and exploitation.”

Yet another installation titled Unravelling of the glamour world, designed with jute ropes, bandage, cotton, lipstick and iron, creates awareness about sexual exploitation of women.

Ramani explains, “From East and West, Bollywood and Hollywood, in the past few months, we have experienced an overflow of news about harassment of women. Through these works of mine, I proclaim women to be strong, urge them to shed off their insecurities and allow their inner strength to reign and rise.”
