Discussing, My Driver Tulong

The book delves deep into the soul of Cambodia, molded by the ancient culture of Angkor and other aspects.

Former civil servant and author M.J. Joseph’s book My Driver Tulong will be discussed on May 24. The event will be moderated and hosted by City Book Leader's chief curator Mohit Gupta, at DLF Riverside on Bay View Road, Vyttila. The book is a detailed narration of the delightful years that Joseph spent in Cambodia working for the UN and the experiences he gained when the country had just morphed from a war-torn Communist moth into a fascinating free market.

Written with a Maughamian touch, the book delves deep into the soul of Cambodia, molded by the ancient culture of Angkor and other aspects. My Driver Tulong, through mesmerising characters who personify the ancient soul of Cambodia and epitomise its modernising mind, describes the contemporary Cambodia and its people. The author details about the people, their lives and loves, their joys and tribulations, their hopes and their anguish. Most of all their innocence is captured in the delightfully inter-connected stories. The characters come alive to etch a never-before known Cambodia. Joseph’s honed observation and delightful humour makes this fictional stretched-travelogue a genre apart and a must read for everyone — whether a traveller or not — interested in South East Asia, Indo-China or Cambodia.
