Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University: Visual journey

Here's how the final year students of the painting department, JNAFAU, made their last show in the university a hit.

If one of the best ways to relive your college days is by displaying art work that you created during that phase, then the final year students of the painting department from Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University, are excelling at that. The students have their final show Fusion 12 — A palette of visual thoughts, going on right now and it comprises 76 of their works.

The art, a mix of paintings, installations and drawings, by 16 students was done during their eighth semester. “We have picked their finest works. The students have worked with a variety of media and this is a visual journey of their time spent in the university,” explains Priti Samyukta, the HoD of the painting department.

While all 76 works are interesting, there were some that stand out. Take for instance the artwork of Vinay. A mix of contemporary and the traditional Cheriyal paintings, Vinay’s work reflects his roots of Cheriyal artists. “In Cheriyal paintings only natural colours are used. Black is taken from the soot of lamps, blue is made from indigo leaves, white is created from sea shells. For this show, one of my paintings is created using natural colours, while I have experimented using acrylic colours for the rest. Cheriyal paintings tell mythological stories and I use that element apart from depicting the life in a village in my work,” explains Vinay who put up five works.

S. Abdul Rehaman’s work reflects his love for travelling. Among the three works he has on display, there is a 3D painting that piques your interest. “I wanted to see how one can use waste material in art, so I used cardboard boxes to create this painting,” explains Rehaman who has so far taken part in four group art shows, across the country.

As you walk through the gallery, you can’t miss the painting inspired by the last supper. “This work isn’t based on religion. I took the last supper as a reference and created this. This was my idea of how the future would look when technology takes over. It also shows how a few people will hold all the power,” explains Prasad who created this work.
