Luxury and decadence: A sense of space inspired by Indian heritage

Here is how Indian handicrafts and embroidery serve as an inspiration for interior designing.

When building a space, people are always on the lookout for exclusive interiors that exude a vibe that is refined and reflects their taste and lifestyle. While minimalistic and monotone trends are still a favourite amongst all, what has recently come into vogue is the exemplifying of the rich Indian heritage to adorn a space that looks traditional, opulent yet contemporary. Saniya Kantawala of Sanya Kantawala Designs shares how Indian art and designs serve as an inspiration for interior designs.

In recent times the Indian artisan is being pushed to the forefront and craftsmanship which has gained special importance. Indian embroidery and handicrafts are a perfect example of creating an amalgamation of the old and new. Needless to say, we are blessed with such rich traditions and heritage that not adopting these styles is almost a sin.

She further adds that known for their intricacy and delicate designs, Indian embroidery and handicrafts such as Zardozi, Chikankari, Kantha etc. have successfully survived the ruins of time. Many of these have been in use since ancient times to adorn the attire of kings and nobles and therefore are considered luxurious and precious.

The usage of gold and silver threads to embroider further added a sense of magnificence to these handicrafts. Apart from these, a large number of handicrafts and artefacts such as clay and mud pots, wooden items, embroidered tapestry and wall hangings, brassware décor and the use of motifs such as paisley, elephants, birds and flowers can be used in a plethora of ways to give your space a traditional touch.

As a land of folklore and stories, art can also be used to weave a narrative. Giving birth to that narrative can further add a layer of thought and elegance.

In terms of interior decor and design, incorporating these elements creates a sense of decadence. For example, for a very regal and grand look, one can use gold embroidered Zardozi or brocade work for curtains, cushion covers, diwans, armrests, table runners, bedspreads, wall hangings, lamps etc.

Handcrafted carved details on storage spaces such as cabinets, centre tables, chairs, mirrors etc. that are further embellished with mirror work, natural stone or ivory details is another vital part of such design.

Earthy tones, patterned flooring, textured walls and tiles together in a colour palette incorporate rich brown shades, burnt ochre or orange inlaid with textures or motifs that hold a symbolic value, can further add a visual and aesthetic appeal. With India’s rich cultural heritage, there a multitude of artefacts that can be used to add warmth and an authentic appeal.
