A love for digital art

Vishnu's interest in painting goes back to his childhood days when he was a fan of water colours.

His love for painting started at a very young age. Vishnudas knew right then that art would be a part of his life forever. Currently working as a graphic designer in Kochi, Vishnu has found fame through some of his digital artworks that are doing the rounds on social media.

Vishnu says his tryst with painting started with normal water colours. “I have been working on digital art since the past two years only and my canvas is the Note by Samsung. But painting happened to me long back. I have been into it since I was in the third grade. Since I had an interest in it, I also went to learn painting at a very young age,” he says.

“Like every other kid, I was first introduced to water colours and from there I slowly shifted to pencil sketching,” says the artist who hails from Payyanur.

So how did he step into the world of digital painting? “I used to digitally paint on computers. I also did my BSc in Multimedia from Kochi. Once the Note came out, I bought that. And with the help of Sketch Book app, I started creating these detailed images.”

Going into details of how the app is used to aid his work, he says, “While creating digital art on computer, we use Photoshop. This app is used in quite a similar way to help with the tools that will aid in creating the art piece.”

Vishnu’s images are much appreciated for their intricate work, especially the eyes. He admits that it is the most time-consuming part of the work. “These works, whether it is the Theyyam or the portrait of children, will easily take up two days to complete. But I do not sit with it continuously. I do take breaks in between and also work on them whenever I find time in between office hours,” he explains.

He compares his love for regular painting with digital painting and says, “Even though all the colours are available right on the platform, it still requires quite an effort, manually, from the artist’s end.”

Vishnu had previously conducted an art exhibition in his hometown. “That was not my digital artwork exhibition. It was just the regular exhibition.” He has also gifted his work to actors Kunchacko Boban and Siddique.

Although digital art works have taken over a good share of his time, Vishnu still finds time for traditional painting. “I am currently learning mural painting. I prefer to do them on canvas and never digitally. I think mural art is much more beautiful on canvas than on screens,” he concludes.
