Vijayawada: Contemporary art on display

Artists from the state showcase their paintings at Vijayawada.

Vijayawada: With a mission to prove a point that Amaravati is not lagging behind with the rest of the world when it comes to the art, National Contemporary Art-2016 was launched to showcase the art work by various artists from Andhra Pradesh. An artist who already made his mark in contemporary art P.J. Stalin, is acting as the curator for the 10-day-long exhibition and brought some of the finest artists who exce-lled in their own style on to one stage for the first time in Vijayawada.

The Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amara-vati has become the venue for the first edition of National Contemporary Art. Around 31 artists from various parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana displayed 40 different art works that includes seven sculptures and three graphic prints. All the art forms that were put up in the exhibition are different in their own style. The young artists chooe various subjects and different methods to paint the canvas. Mr Stalin came up with a bright abstract painting in red using geometrical shapes to showcase the moon from urban landscapes. R. Vinod Chow-dary captured the landscapes of Guntur with pleasant colours in abstract form. His idea of depicting the first two alphabets of Telugu language on a tarpaulin sheet with varying styles attracts the attention. “The idea is to convey though we are having many dialects in Telugu, we all speak the same language,” said Mr Vinod.

Mr D.V.S. Krishna created a woman in deep thought with fiber mould. The bronze sculpture created by Mr Sivarama Chari speaks volumes on how the current technological advancements actually making the life of humans mechanical. Mr D. Simhachalam and Mr V. Prashanth, who are on the faculty in fine arts department of Andhra University, presented their works on how too much of everything creates problems and the need for reducing pollution.

Mr Manda Srinivas of Vijayawada, but settled in Vizag, came up with figurative sculptures. He created a portrait of C.S.N. Patnaik, a famous sculpturist with bronze. Ms Padmaja from Vizag who was the only woman among all 31 artists portrayed the art forms that depict the dependence of humans on nature. The quality of the art will show the richness of the culture and maturity of the people, said Mr Stalin. “When we are talking about the capital city of international standards, we should be on par with international standards in every aspect and we wanted to show that our artists can produce the works that can compete at any level,” he added.

Another artist who gained expertise in installation work and abstract painting, Mr R. Vinod Chowdary, said after the state bifurcation there was no proper facility in the new state of Andhra Pradesh for the artists. “We took the initiative to provide a dais for the young artists to show their talent and this is the first step in that direction. We want to expand the National Contemporary Art on to other states from next year,” he said.
