Luck plays important role in thwarting terror attacks: PC

New Delhi: It's luck and better intelligence sharing among various agencies that no terror strikes have taken place in the aftermath of Mumbai attacks last year, says the Union Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram.

The Home Minister was responding to questions of the Intelligence Bureau sleuths at the Centenary Endowment Lecture here during which he presented a road map for a "bold, thorough and radical restructuring" of the country's security architecture.

During 2009, there were 12 to 13 terror strikes foiled which had the potential of becoming another Mumbai, Delhi or Jaipur attacks, he said.

"Luck plays and important role in this," a smiling Mr Chidambaram said and added that when he was in the United States he had asked the officials over there as to how no terrorist strike takes place after 9/11.

"I was told that it is 95 per cent luck and five per cent of the changes made after the 2001 attack," he said.

"So, while it has been luck mainly, there has been better intelligence gathering and better intelligence sharing between various agencies," Mr Chidambaram said.
