Jerusalem: Israel's army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi, has left on a trip to India, the first time the head of the Israeli military is visiting the country, the army said on Sunday.
Ashkenazi left for India late on Saturday as part of a trip to Asia, it said in a statement.
"The visit to India is part of the process of strengthening the ties between Israel and India and the nations' militaries," it said, adding that the trip marked "the first official visit of an IDF (Israel Defence Forces) chief to India."
Ashkenazi is due to meet with his Indian counterpart, General Deepak Kapoor, on his visit, as well as the Indian national security advisor and the heads of the country's air force and navy.
Ashkenazi will also visit other countries in the region during his trip, an army spokesman said, but declined to say which ones.
Israel replaced France in 2007 as India's second-largest arms supplier after Russia and could grab the number one slot through a vast array of defence agreements already signed with New Delhi.

It is time that some polarisation of rational and practical human survival on this planet is thought about. Whatever the causes and conditions might be, the problem on hand has to get priority and that is terrorisation of innocent humans. Towards this goal all good wisdom should prevail and world's efforts to normalise should be the need of the moment.
Notwithstanding the merits and demerits of the past, all secular forces should work any and all solutions with whatever inputs and strategies at hand. US and India have suffered the onslaughts to a greatest extent and these recessionist situations makes joint action more relevant. Being in US we find that there has been already a great delay which has to be surmounted putting all joint efforts on the go... for the survival of humans on this planet. Millions of young lives of US and India and millions of dollars and rupees are going down the drain. This could be spent more effectively for better living standards of these countries.
