Pune: A security guard posted at historical Shanwarwada palace here has been found dead, police said on Wednesday.

According to complaint filed by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which maintains the palace relics, Santosh Salve (39) was on night duty yesterday when some unidentified persons killed him with sharp weapons.

The locker in which entrance fee is deposited was also removed from the establishment, but it was later left behind the palace as they apparently could not open the lock, police said, adding theft could be the motive behind the crime.

Shanwarwada was built in 18th century by Peshwa dynasty in Maharashtra.
