Feb. 8: Pro-Telangana activists attacked several theatres and obstructed screening of Adhurs, starring Junior NTR, in north Telangana districts of Karimnagar, Adilabad, Warangal, and Nizamabad, protesting against the remarks by the film producer and Telugu Desam MLA Kodali Nani on the Telangana movement and on leaders of various parties including the TRS, TD and the Congress.
However, there was no damage to property. The agitators destroyed flexiboards and posters.
Anticipating more trouble, the managements of nine theatres in Karimnagar district stopped screening the film from morning itself.
These include Lakshmi theatre in Korutla, Bharat in Karimnagar, Rajarajeswara in Vemulawada, Srilakshmi in Sircilla, Urvasi in Godavarikhani, Sri Venkateswara in Husnabad, Natraj in Huzurabad and Murali theatre in Jamikunta.
Heavy police personnel were deployed at theatres as students gathered in large numbers for protest. While several managements voluntarily stopped screening, protestors obstructed the screening at some other theatres. Lawyers and TSJAC representatives lodged a complaint with police in Karimnagar against Nani, stating that he had made inflammatory and provocative remarks.
In Adilabad district, Telangana agitators burnt film reels of Adhurs in a theatre in Nirmal. The owner of the theatre in Adilabad cancelled the screening of the film voluntarily.
In Warangal district, protestors stopped screening the film at Vijaya talkies in Hanamkonda and destroyed flexiboards and posters. They later went to Ashok theatre where Bindas is being screened. This stars Manoj, son of Mohan Babu who is supporting Samaikhyandhra. Protestors obstructed the screening of the film and pelted stones, damaging window panes of the theatre. Police rushed to the spot and took some students into custody. The management of Ram theatre announced the stopping of screening of Adhurs after protestors obstructed screening. The screening of the film was also stopped at Jangaon, Parkal and Mahbubabad.
In Nizamabad district, managements stopped screening the film after protestors stormed theatres in Nizamabad, Kamareddy and Banswada.
In Kamareddy, all theatres remained closed.
