Bio diesel first loco flagged off

Diesel locomotives primarily work on high speed diesel.

Tiruchy: The first loco powered by bio diesel was flagged off at Golden Rock railway workshop at Tiruchy on Tuesday by A.K. Agarwarl, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchchirappalli division in the presence of D. Rajamani, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer, diesel loco shed, Golden Rock, Tiruchchirappalli and N. Balaji, Manager (customer services), Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

A railway release said that from Tuesday, all diesel locomotives released from the diesel loco shed, Golden Rock will be provided with blended bio-diesel for hauling passenger and freight trains.

Diesel locomotives primarily work on high speed diesel. On an average per day, 24,000 litres of high speed diesel is consumed by diesel locomotives here, it added. In line with the Central Government policy of augmenting renewable energy resources for reducing the consumption of fossil fuel, the Railway Board gave orders for creating facilities nationwide so that bio-diesel can be blended with high speed diesel, it said.

With the assistance of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, facilities and required pipeline connections were provided in the diesel loco shed here for blending 5 per cent bio-diesel with 95 per cent high speed diesel oil while topping up fuel tanks of diesel locomotives at the shed, it added.
