Hyderabad, Nov. 18: Senior Telugu filmmaker Thammareddy Bharadwaja on Wednesday hit out at Tollywood’s top actors, saying they were dumb and not man enough to do bold films.

His diatribe came when he was asked whether top heroes of Tollywood would act in off-beat movies such as Taare Zameen Par. “None of our heroes will do that kind of cinema,” he said. “There are men in Bollywood but our heroes are not men.”

Speaking to the media at the 16th International Children’s Film festival being held at the city, he said Tollywood heroes knew nothing about cinema but felt they were demigods. Most of the actors in the industry were dumb and don’t go beyond making movies with two fight scenes and a few dances, he said.

“The mindset of our heroes is very bad. They don’t watch international cinema and know nothing about movies. Their parents are actors and so they have become actors too. They don’t have passion for cinema. They don’t experiment at all.”

Then the veteran checked himself and added, “I can’t talk further here. It will be controversial.”

Mr Bharadwaja, a former president of the AP Film Producers’ Council, said producers hesitate to invest in children’s movies as they were not commercially viable. He asked the government to give total subsidy and screening facilities for good children’s films.

Mr. Bharadwaja, what you said is absolutely true. Most of the films in Telugu are hero-centred. Who will see the walking styles of heros in slow motion nowadays? ..lol.. You see this more often. A few fights, a few meaningless songs w/ exposure are today fashion in Telugu movies. Quality of comedy/story is not to be seen at all.

Waaah.. Very daring comment. You are 100 per cent correct. I do not know how these Telugu people are allowing dynastic rule. Those days are gone where you get to see actors like NTR SVR etc.

Truth is bitter. Someone maybe a great actor or artiste, but their sons, grandsons and great grandsons may not be so. By and large what we find in Tollywood these days is the dynastic principle in operation. The progeny or children of yeseryears are virtually dumped on the viewers. They may not necessarily possess acting talents. Perhaps in the light of such trends where budding heroes are not cut for their roles, yet dumped on viewers, Bharadwaja may have said of Tollywood heroes lacking the necessary talents.

Agreed. But no one is forcing people to watch those talentless progenies. Directors, producers will give what people want and watch. Don't they? They are not in the business of losing money. If people stop watching those sterotypical artless and actionless movies, then producers will stop financing them. How many movies can these progenies make and continue to lose money? So it is not them. It is us who are to blame. It's a consumer's market. We need to demand quality.

Typical Tollywood hero comment. 'Not man enough'? If he really wants to make such movies and bring about change, he should be the change he is seeking in other artists. If he has the courage, he should take the initiative and convince good actors to take the lead in creative different types of movies. Insuting or calling names are totally uncalled for and not productive at all.

Everyone is to blame, including the audience. Although it is a bit over the top to call them "not men", he should be commended for speaking up.
