Hyderabad, Dec. 25: The city traffic police has short-listed 30 busy routes for installation of pelican signals. The signals are meant to make road crossing by pedestrians safer.

In March, the traffic police had requested the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to install pelican signals at 60 busy traffic junctions in the city. But the GHMC officials agreed to install only 30 pelican lights, each costing Rs 30,000 to 40,000. “Subsequently, we have short-listed 30 areas that need the signals on a priority basis, and sent the list to the civic body,” said the DCP traffic police, Mr A. Ravichandra.

The pelican traffic light has a distinct symbol (usually a sign of walking man) to instruct the traffic when to stop and the pedestrians when to cross.

“With zebra crossings and pelican traffic signals in place, there will be a substantial dip in the number of pedestrians falling victim to accidents,” said Mr Ravichandra.
