Hyderabad: The political crisis in Andhra Pradesh over the Telangana issue intensified on Friday with the number of MLAs resigning climbing to 130 as protests broke out in non-Telangana regions over the Centre’s decision to split the state.

From a gram panchayat ward member to an MP, elected representatives at different levels of the political pyramid cutting across party lines have resigned from their posts in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions strongly protesting the "unilateral decision" of the Congress to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. Scores of panchayat ward members, sarpanches, mandal parishad territorial constituency members, mandal parishad presidents, zilla parishad territorial constituency members, municipal councillors, municipal chairpersons, municipal corporation corporators, mayors, zilla parishad chiefs, MLAs, MLCs and MPs belonging to Congress, Telugu Desam and Praja Rajyam have put in their papers.

Ministers, both Central and state, hailing from the region, however, haven't yet decided on their resignations despite mounting pressure from their respective regions for them to follow in the footsteps of fellow legislators. The ministers so far have remained silent on the issue.

While the number of MPs who resigned is five (two Congress and three TDP), the number of MLAs touched 130, including 76 Congress, 40 TDP and 14 PRP. As many as 34 members of the state Legislative Council have also tendered their resignation, strongly denouncing the Centre's move to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh. The en masse resignation spree is seen as an unprecedented development in the political history anywhere in the country so far.

Twenty-three more MLAs submitted their resignation to Speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy. In all 76 MLAs from Congress have resigned, 40 from TD and 14 from PR in the 294-member Assembly.

Amid a debate over whether or not to continue Assembly proceedings in the wake of the en masse resignations of legislators, the Speaker adjourned the House till Monday.

The Speaker made it clear that he has to speak to all those who quit before taking a decision after ascertaining if they resigned due to their own volition or due to any compulsion.

In view of the crisis, the state government is holding consultations with the attorney-general.

The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, has called a meeting of floor leaders of all parties to take stock of the situation.

Incidents of violence and stoning of buses were reported in towns of coastal Andhra and Rayasaleema against the Centre’s decision to carve out Telangana state.

Speaking in the Assembly, Mr Rosaiah appealed to people of all the regions and political parities to act with restraint. Referring to the protests in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, he said there was tension and students were boycotting classes. He voiced concern over the growing incidents of violence.

Mr Rosaiah also called a meeting of the floor leaders of all the parties to discuss the issue of resignations.

In New Delhi, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, is meeting Andhra MPs to take stock of the situation.

At the start of the proceedings, the AP Speaker announced that 103 MLAs of Congress, TD and PRP have resigned and that he will go by the rule book while taking a decision on them.

When legislators protesting the proposed division of the state to carve out Telangana rushed to the Speaker’s podium and stalled the proceedings, the house was adjourned. TRS legislators raised the slogans of "Jai Telangana" as legislators from other regions rushed to the podium.

As soon as the House met for the day, the issue of the resignation of legislators from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions came up. Since only 83 members were present in the 294-member house, Mr Reddy sought the opinion of the leaders of all parties on whether the House should be run.

Mr Rosaiah said the House should be run smoothly so that all the issues could be discussed to find a solution.

Earlier, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader, Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi, wondered how the House could be run when majority of the members were not present. To this the Speaker said those who had submitted their resignations continued to be members of the house as he had not accepted them.

The Praja Rajyam president, Mr Chiranjeevi, said that while the resolution on the formation of Telangana state was a right decision, the methodology adopted was not proper.

If a country or state will fight one another,
surely it will become unstable. Leaders(chitamparam)... should think and speak.
Think and commit to the promises. Really our nation is going under pressure.

In my opinion, the fast of Mr KCR is a waste. Because if he is not really selfish he can demand that the same government develop Telangana districts by going on a fast instead of asking for separate Telangana. Our elders said us that "Ikyamathyame maha balam." no one said about dividing. Mahathma Gandhi sacrified himself for the independence of India, not for dividing it into parts. Being a citizen of Telangana I say taht we want Samaikhyandhra Pradesh. Every citizen should remember that they are first Indians only later do they belong to Telangana, Rayalaseema, and Coastal Andhra. Please develop our state if possible but dont divide it.

People have misconception that a certain AP politician has developed Hitec City in Hyd and also because of biased media. Indian economy was opened by Telangana leader P.V. Narasimha Rao. Since then we saw development throughout India and moreso in southern India because of high number of IT graduates and IT was only thing we could export and earn lot of money. As per 2007/2008 IT related income for AP was only Rs 20,000 cr whereas Karnataka's IT income was Rs 60,000 cr though AP had more IT graduates.
All these software companies came here not because of any politician or to devolop Hyd. They came here to make money and get free or subsidied land. For example Microsoft might provide employment to a few thousand people but do you know how much they are making and taking out. During Nizam's rule HYD was more than 80% sewers covered and Telanganites never saw Hyd roads flooding after 10 mins rain. Today HYD is 40% sewer covered and floods after 10mins rain, that's the sort of devolopment we had in the last 20 yrs in Hyd.
People have also misconception that many invested in Hyd but go back 20 yrs and see their lives, they made money here not brought money. I don't think any investors from other states are worried if we have a separate state its only some section of people from our own state who are worried and who grabbed land illegally.
Why are people burning buses and doing damage to public property in andhra region, How is common man affected if we have seperate state, it wouldn't affect his life, probably it gets better if they have their own capital city. It's some goondas who are organising these crimes.

Everything in Telangana belongs to the people of Telangana, except Hyderabad, Unlike Bangalore or Madras or any major city with large counts of Andhra people, Hyderabad has been the capital of AP, as everyone in the state should have equal right on its Capital. The question, why Madras was not shared equally when Andhra was separated from Madras state arises, it`s because people from Andhra wanted to separate not Tamils, so it`s their state and their capital and we left it, Similarly, Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana folks want to separate and hence Hyderabad should remain the capital of AP. However, Hyderabad is engulfed by Telangana so a fair call would be to make it an Union Territory.

I guess you forgot that Kurnool was once capital city for Andhra State. So, it will be sensible to make it capital again and forget about Hyderabad. State division does not mean either people of Andhra or Telangana should pack their luggage and move to respective places. There are nothing called borders, it's all man-made. India is a democratic nation and anyone can move anywhere in our country. In layman terms, you don't need to fight about what will be the capital or else we will end up like Israel and Palestine. I really do not understand why people are panic about who will get Hyderabad. I guess those people are afraid of building another big city like Hyderabd in another part of Andhra. Of course, its all about money because you want Hyderabad, but you don't want people of Telangana. Its like a package you want Hyderabd, you have to take Telangana. I know its hard to get a good deal.

What is going on in india? Why are the regional feelings being brought for political advantage of some selfish leaders? Did everybody forgot what happened when British ruled us? Their power was not arms or technology. Their main power was their divide and rule policy. Selfish people often try to highlight diffrentiations regional/caste/religions to exploit people. Sad part of indian people is they fall in the political trap of such people.
