Hyderabad, Dec 4: The Congress corporator, Mrs B. Karthika Reddy, on Friday became the first Mayor of Greater Hyderabad. She was elected unopposed.

Mr Jaffar Hussain of MIM was elected deputy Mayor without a contest. Both Mrs Karthika and Mr Hussain are first-time corporators. Mr Hussain won from Toli Chowki municipal ward and Mrs Karthika from Tarnaka municipal ward.

The Congress and the MIM had reached an understanding to share the seat of Mayor for two years each. A decision on the final year will be taken later. However, it is not clear whether they will share the post two years in a row or whether there will be a change every year.

The election of Ms Karthika and Mr Hussain became a mere formality as the Opposition Telugu Desam did not field a candidate.

The Congress and the MIM put together an unassailable lead of votes, including corporators and ex-officio members in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

Though all the 150 corporators and ex-officio members attended the election meeting, there was no need for a ballot. The district collector and presiding officer, Mr Navin Mittal, announced the names.

Though Mrs Karthika is the first woman mayor of Greater Hyderabad, she is the fourth woman to hold the coveted post in the city.

Earlier, Ms Rani Kumudini Devi held the mayor’s seat in the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad in 1962-63, followed by Ms Sarojini Pulla Reddy in 1965-66 and Ms B. Kumud Naik in 1968-69.

It was Deccan Chronicle that first revealed that the GHMC will have a woman as its mayor.

Her choice came as a surprise to many but sources said the former Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, had promised her husband, Mr Banda Chandra Reddy, a good post, when he was denied a ticket from the Secunderabad Assembly constituency. YSR asked him to work for the victory of Jayasudha who contested from there.

When the names of six mayor aspirants came up at a meeting at Gandhi Bhavan on Friday morning, Congress leaders and ministers close to YSR recommended the name of Mrs Karthika.

Awaam ku ullu banana ho hi nahi saktha, awaam hushiyaar hai lekin phir bhi people of old city have "voted" for a MIM, they are not interested in development. Owaisi family & MIM have been representing Hyderabad for a few decades now, the old city has not moved an inch forward... jaise ka waisa hi hai. What was MIM's agenda during GHMC elections? Babri structure dispute. Seven out of 43 MIM corporators have rowdy sheets. Perhaps this is what old city wants. People of old city have rejected an educated man, Zahid Ali Khan. They have preferred a barrister who either has no knowledge of law or has no respect for the law of the land. Everybody saw how the barrister was running after a polling agent with a stick in his hand. You get what you deserve. old city folks should not complain.

Tarnaka....way 2 go

The elder Owaisi conducted himself in a mature manner in resolving the issue. His clinching the issue at Delhi is still more commendable. It shows he is mature enough to know who pulls the strings.

If one party comes from old city all the time, they will become overconfident and will not perform their duties well.

Ab Asad or Akbar Owaisi kya muh dikhayenge apne logon ko? Bahut badi badi phek rahe thain.. mayor humare party ka hoga. Soniaji ka akhir sunna hi pada.

Are bhai Asad ho ya Akbar chup old city ke Muslims ko ullu banate/ Isse tho achcha hota BJP aa jati. At least woh log kaam tho karte.
