Hyderabad, Nov. 25: The results of the elections to 150 wards of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will be announced on Thursday. The first of the result would be out by 9.30 am and the fate of 1,310 candidates who contested for 150 wards would be decided by 2 pm.
A confident Mr K. Rosaiah had thrown the challenge that he will resign as Chief Minister if the Telugu Desam wins even one seat more than the Congress in the GHMC elections.
Much is at stake for the Congress as this is the first election after the death of its charismatic leader Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, while the TD is trying to regain its hold on the city. The MIM is bent on proving that it is still a major force in the state capital.
While the Congress fielded 150 candidates, the TD fielded 141, BJP 137, Lok Satta 126, MIM 70, PRP 64, CPM 35, CPI 13, other registered parties 34 and independents 540.
Telangana Rashtra Samiti candidates contested as independents following its decision not to officially contest the GHMC elections.
In the elections to MCH in 2002, the MIM had emerged as the single largest party with 36 corporators. The TD-BJP combine got 37 divisions while the Congress bagged 21 divisions.
