Hyderabad, Oct. 10: The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, has decided to relocate people from low lying areas across the river Krishna to avoid frequent evacuations during floods. However, this decision is likely to evoke opposition from various quarters.
The state government on Saturday announced a special housing package to people in the low-lying areas. This package will be implemented for those who lost their houses in the floods from September 29 to October 4 in five districts viz. Kurnool, Mahabubnagar, Krishna, Guntur and parts of Nalgonda.
Mr Rosaiah said that the package as “biggest relief” for the flood victims and pointed out that no other state has announced such a housing scheme.
Though the scheme envisages provision of full-fledged houses to flood victims who lost their houses, the actual aim is to end the trouble of evacuation permanently.
Evacuations during floods are causing much headache and financial burden for the government and the district machinery.
Mr Rosaiah on Saturday announced the details of the special package which would provide Rs 68,200 for construction of each house.
The Central government-sponsored Indira Avas Yojana and state government’s Indiramma housing programmes would be merged with one another so that the flood victims would get maximum benefit.
“There are nearly one lakh houses which have completely collapsed,” said Mr Rosaiah.
He added: “They have to be reconstructed at an elevated place. All the houses would be taken up by the state Housing Corporation and completed in approximately six months.”
Mr Rosaiah appealed to the people to cooperate with the government and give consent for relocation.

I would like to know whether this is the first time that AP has received this amount of rainfall. If yes, then no comment. But if not, then was our government sleeping when so many people were becoming homeless and in despair? Now the governmment wants to give them shelter. Enough is enough and now it's time for change and we youth should take the burden and help all the needy by contributing money, manpower and resources so that the poor and needy will have a normal life as ours.
This would really be a nice move as it would enable the government to cut down costs of evacuation, temporary shelter and rehabilitation apart from human suffering.
