Oct. 26: The floods that swamped Kurnool last month dumped thousands of tonnes of sand and sludge in streets, drains and lakhs of buildings.
Since the city was submerged for several days, the water foodgrain, clothes and anything that was degradable. Every house has generated an estimated 3-5 tonnes of garbage.
Residents are throwing the waste on the streets, which poses a big problem for the workers.
People are developing nausea and vomiting due to the bad odour emanating from the garbage.
“We have been taking up garbage cleaning operations on a war-footing since last two weeks. Due to this, we could remove 97,000
tonnes of garbage so far. Now we are left with only 10,000 tonnes,” said the Kurnool collector, Mr M.K. Meena.
He said the operations are being carried on a time-bound mode and the targets are fixed to each and every sanitation team under the supervision of top officials.
The authorities have used 12,500 bags of bleaching powder and 3,000 litres of phenyl to control the spread of epidemic.
