Stunning attack
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov v Artyom Timofeev, Aeroflot Moscow Open 2004. White launches a stunning attack leading to an unusual checkmate. What does he do?
Solution:
Solution: 1 Ng6+!! If now Rxg6 2 Rxd8 mates or fxg6 (or Kg8) 3 Rxd6 Qxd6 4 Qxd6 Rxd6 5 Re8 mate. So Black tried hxg6 2 Qh4+! when if Kg8 3 Qxd8+ Rxd8 4 Rxd8+ Kh7 5 Rh3+ Qh5 6 Rxh5+ and 7 Rxa8 with an extra rook. So Black played: 1 Ng6+ hxg6 2 Qh4+ Qh5 and now came the real point: 3 Qxd8+ Rxd8 4 Rxd8+ Kh7 5 Ree8 and Black resigned. If Kh6 (to avoid Rh8 mate) 6 Rh8+ with Rxh5+ and Rxa8 and White has a crushing material lead.
