No fireworks this Friday

'Mr Joe B. Carvalho' and 'Sholay 3D' had stiff competition from 'Dhoom 3'

One might not have expected major fireworks at the box office on the first Friday of 2014, still, it was believed that Mr Joe B. Carvalho and Sholay 3D would witness a decent opening at least.

While the first week in the New Year is never considered a great time to release a film, both of these had managed to promote themselves fairly well, creating the expectation that they would do well.

Mr Joe B. Carvalho had an opening that was only in the 10 to 20 per cent range. The reviews were average, although filmgoers who did see the film provided fairly positive feedback. However, with a less than optimal opening, the weekend collections came to a mere Rs 2.5 crore (approximately).

Sholay 3D did somewhat better, and that too with a fewer number of screens. The film, however, did manage to cross the Rs 6-crore mark in the first weekend. With some hype surrounding the release, the collections were reasonable. It’s now a question of how much better the film can do.

Both these films continued to get stiff competition from Dhoom 3, which took in major collections in its third week too. While it had to contend with new Hollywood and Bollywood releases taking up a chunk of the showtimes and screens, Dhoom 3 continued with its strong show.
