Two to tango: Sara and Angad's onscreen pairing, off-screen friendship

Sara Khan and Angad Hasija tell us what makes their on-screen chemistry and off-screen dosti tick.

When Sara Khan and Angad Hasija get together, the chemistry between them is — as the cliché goes — crackling. But there really is something about this duo, which made their show Bidaai such a huge success, and which earned them a legion of fans (who have nicknamed them “Sangad”).

Sara and Angad have teamed up yet again, this time for Saubhagyalaxmi, and the TRPs of the show have received a boost from fans who are happy to see the duo back together. In a chat with us, Sara and Angad talk about their successful onscreen pairing, off-screen friendship and more.

Sara, Angad, what was the ice-breaker when the two of you met for the first time on the sets?
Sara: When I first saw him, I was very disappointed that, “Oh! This is my hero”. He got to know about my reaction and was mad at me for a long time. But we finally started talking to each other when I made a joke that he couldn’t help but laugh at. Ever since, we’ve been the closest of friends.
Angad: Yes, initially Sara and I would sit in different corners of the set and not talk to each other. But a few days later, we had to shoot for a scene where I had to hold her neck tightly. Unfortunately, my grip was so tight that she screamed out in fear. Sara was upset and I felt very bad, as it wasn’t my intention to hurt her. In order to set things right, I would apologise to her, every single day. That’s how we got talking.

Was it awkward, initially filming romantic scenes?
Sara: No, there was never anything awkward between us. We were always comfortable with each other, although we found filming such scenes funny sometimes!
Angad: Actually it wasn’t difficult romancing her on screen as we had already bonded by then.

What in your opinion makes your onscreen chemistry work?
Sara: I am moody at times and don’t get along with everyone. Angad on the other hand, is a kind-hearted co-star and gem of a guy. He adjusts with me in every situation. I guess that is what makes our chemistry work. Besides we really look cool together.
Angad: The superb friendship we share makes our chemistry work. The moment we are together, we get along like a house on fire.

Who is the better co-star?
Sara: Angad, any day.
Angad: The better co-star is, of course, me!

Have you often burst out laughing when you were meant to be filming a serious scene?
Sara: Whenever we look at each other, we laugh! If I make any gesture or smile, something funny happens and Angad cannot stop laughing! Our director also gets irritated and ends up scolding us.
Angad: We are attuned to what the other person is thinking and hence keep laughing at our silent jokes.

Who needs more re-takes?
Sara: It depends completely on the situation. The one who ends up laughing more during the shots requires the maximum re-takes.
Angad: Jokes aside, we are very professional that way and get involved in our scenes, so actually neither of us needs re-takes as such. Touch wood!

Has there been any one scene that’s particularly close to your hearts?
Sara: Once we were shooting a scene where Angad had to tell me to get out of his house. He had a stern face while muttering the dialogue and I really thought we were fighting. After the scene, he came running to me and said it wasn’t real and he was only enacting the script given to him. Even though I hated the scene big time, it is really close to my heart.
Angad: That scene is close to my heart as well. It was a very emotional moment as she thought it was all real and burst out crying. I actually had to convince her it was just a sequence. There is nothing more to it.

Any scene that made you wish “Oh, wish I had done it better”?
Sara: I have a habit of perfecting my shots, so after I give a shot I never crib about it.
Angad: Actually I feel that way after every scene. I always have this craving for doing better and better.

What’s one thing you like about each other and one thing you dislike?
Sara: He loves me a lot as his best friend, and I love that. The only thing I dislike is how much he talks! [Laughs]
Angad: What I like about Sara is that she loves my family and me unconditionally. She talks to my mom, daughter and wife on a regular basis to keep tabs on their well-being. The one thing I don’t like is how easily she can be manipulated.

Who is the “crazier” one among the two of you?
Sara: I am, and Angad will agree.
Angad: Sara is definitely the crazier one!

Where are you most likely to be found during breaks on set?
Sara: I always gather everyone in my make-up room, so I am likely to be found there during breaks.
Angad: I chill in the make-up room with all the artistes. Sara is usually with us as well.

So, who among you is the jasoos who gets all the on-set gossip?
Sara: That would be me. Angad always comes and asks me about the latest gossip!
Angad: Sara is best at jasoosi!

And what habits annoy you in your co-star?
Sara: That Angad talks too much and laughs at his own silly jokes! [Laughs]
Angad: She can nag a bit at times. Like if I tell her she has put on weight, she’ll keep asking me about it.
