Living life on her own sweet terms

A plus-size Geetha Bhatt has proven that you don't need to be skinny in order to be a successful TV star.

They say good things come in small packages but this saying does not hold good at all times. Size really does not matter when it comes to real talent which has its own weight. With the change in the mindset of people in the entertainment industry, the scripts are more realistic and do not just focus on the pretty and slim beauties. Geetha Bhat, who essays the role of ‘Gundamma’ in Brahmangantu has definitely broken the stereotypes.

The multi-talented actress is a singer too, who is exploring her dancing skills on the reality show. She speaks with Bengaluru Chronicle, sharing her journey from working in a corporate company to acting, singing and dancing.

“I never thought that I would act someday. In fact, I have no idea how it really happened to me. Prior to my TV ventures, I was working with a corporate company but being a passionate singer, I later quit my job to concentrate more on practicing and establishing my career in playback singing. This is when the producers of Brahmangantu, who were in search of a female protagonist came across my photos from a social media site and I was approached for the role,” says Geetha.

She further shares that she was initially sceptical about acting. “When I was told about that venture, I thought I could get an opportunity to sing but to my surprise,

I was being offered the female lead role. I had no knowledge about acting, and when I shared it with Shruthi Naidu madam, she helped me gain confidence. It is only because of Shruthi madam’s (and every other member associated with the serial) support that I could perform. The entire credit goes them,” she adds.

The singing actress says she never had any set dreams. “I am someone who will take things as it comes instead of setting goals. A person either feels happy when he reaches the goal or feels utterly bad when he cannot reach his desired destination in life. I strongly feel that it is important to take every opportunity which knocks on one’s door. Within a few months into my debut as a TV actress, I have thoroughly enjoyed my journey though I have faced several hardships. But more than the challenges, the unconditional love from the audience is priceless,” she adds. As far as body shaming is concerned, she feels there is a change in mindset. “This is one of the reasons why Brahmagantu has witnessed immense popularity. Initially, my face was not revealed when the promos of the serial were telecast. We were curious but when it finally kickstarted, the response was beyond all our expectations. In fact, a lot of girls who are like me, express that they are inspired by me. All I say is that learn to love yourself with a positive belief and the rest does not matter. I love myself and even laugh at myself many a time. Life is beautiful which should be lived on one’s terms and not others opinions,” Geetha says.

Geetha who is also participating in a dancing reality show, has been lucky with her singing too with more offers for live performances and playback opportunities. She has sung quite a few numbers for the Kannada films which are still in the initial stages of production. Before signing off, Geetha shares that she is working on her fitness to stay healthy and not to “prove a point to people.”
