For whom the bell TOLLYS!

The theatre actress went into films with great aspirations. Now, Nabha Natesh is riding high in other southern industries too.

She burst into the limelight as Pataka, in her debut Kannada movie — Vajrakaya starring alongside Century Star Shivarajkumar. She then followed it up with a couple of other ventures before she landed in Tollywood for Adhugo, and another biggie starring Sudheer Babu, the brother-in-law of Mahesh Babu, under his home production Sudheer Babu Productions. The film titled Nannu Dochukunduvate is being directed by RS Naidu. Actress Nabha Natesh, who did theatre before making her way into movies, speaks to Bengaluru Chronicle on bagging back-to-back Telugu films and her take on what has led to many Kannada actresses being recognised for their talent in other industries.

“After great support and appreciation for my work in Kannada films, especially Vajrakaya, I kept getting many similar roles, but as an artiste who has a strong theatre background, I wanted to do unique roles with different shades to the characters that I wish to portray. This is when I was approached for Adhugo in Telugu, which is again being produced by a big banner — Suresh Productions, and is being directed by Tollywood’s most talented film maker, Ravi Babu. The production house has launched so many talented actors to date. While I was shooting for this film, I also signed another film Nannu Dochukunduvate,” says Nabha Natesh.

While these two films are set for release, the actress wonders which of these films, will announce her debut in Telugu first.

When asked about her Kannada movies, Nabha explains that shooting simultaneously for two big films has kept her busy. “Though I keep getting offers in Kannada, a majority of the roles were similar to my previous films. I want to do different roles. While I am indebted to the character which earned me fame and appreciation, yet as an artiste who has worked in theatre, my hunger for diverse roles has kept me waiting. During my theatre days, I would do multiple roles, shifting from one to another with ease. I want the audience to notice my versatility.” She also addresses the question of this being her comeback, “It is certainly not a comeback. I have not gone anywhere, and am based here. I was busy wrapping up films which needed my complete attention.”

As more Kannada actresses are recognised by other film industries, Nabha feels that it is the quality of Kannada films in the recent past that has led to the current demand for talent from Sandalwood.

“The recent trend in Kannada films has made other industries notice the immense talent here. Whenever I interact with actors and makers from other industries, they talk about a few recent Kannada films and how much they loved them. This is certainly one of the main reasons why actresses are getting challenging roles to play in other languages too,” says Nabha.

The actress who loves spicy food, was quick to learn Telugu. “It is similar to our Kannada. Many are amazed by my quick learning skills. Now, it has become a hobby to learn new languages. I am now quite fluent in all South Indian languages. Earlier I thought Telugu was difficult, but now I have found a knack of learning languages, and I am loving it.”

As she signs off, Nabha reveals that in Adhugo which revolves around a piglet, it is going to a complete laughter ride and in another, she will be seen in her potential best as an entertainer.
