When Sabrina croons, Sam arranges!

The voice behind Bengaluru-based S&M Project, Sabrina Price dishes out about her latest collaboration with sound engineer, Samson Philip.

From collaborations to lending her voice to bands and even hosting karaoke sessions, Sabrina Price is known for her power packed performances and collaborations with artistes all over the city as a part of her S&M Project.

The lead vocalist of The Revivers recently collaborated with Samson Philip, a Bengaluru-based renowned sound engineer to put up a power packed performance for music lovers in the city. In a tete-a-tete with the dynamic duo, we find out more about their influences, love for music, and journey so far...

For somebody who has been singing since the age of four, it’s quite hard to believe that she has no educational qualifications in the field per se. “It’s true though! I’ve only been singing – from friends birthday parties to weddings I just sort of went with the flow. But I haven’t studied music – I don’t know a single musical note and don’t know how to play any instrument,” she exclaims.

Known for her amplified voice, the songstress believes music is in her blood. “I love it and want to be around music all the time. Music is also very fulfilling as opposed to a regular job, where you are hardly appreciated. But after every performance, I have people coming up and thanking me for making their evenings,” smiles the vocalist who is collaborating with Samson Philip, a popular sound engineer from the city who has also been part of a number of local bands.

“I always wanted to do something with music. And sound engineering seemed like a good option because I love science as well and helped me get a lot of exposure to the music scene,” opines Samson.

No microphones, no speakers, and raw acoustic music was what the collaboration was all about. With Sabrina’s powerful vocals and Samson’s guitar skills, the duo focused on performing music that the crowd loved and related to. Nothing was too farfetched for the duo who covered tunes from various genres, irrespective of how dated or fresh the tunes were.

The whole process though, looks incredibly glamorous from the outside. “It’s nothing like it seems,” Sabrina pipes in. “The music field as such is a very insecure job. There are lights burning on stage that are almost blinding us – hence the sunglasses. And when it comes to bands, after performances people come up on stage and create a scene if you don’t allow them to play on your instruments. And we can’t even be rude because one bad review and the reputation can be ruined,” she reveals.

The songstress who doubles as an IT professional during the day is also an ardent bookworm. “I have the tendency to zone out when I read which annoys my family a little,” laughs Sabrina. While Samson on the other hand, is quite the adventure enthusiast. “Also, if I weren’t a musician, I’d definitely be a chef. Cooking is my second biggest passion,” he chimes in conclusion.
