HeFI-nomenally jazzed up!

This Polish modern jazz quartet sounds off about its music after a rivetting performance in the city last evening.

From when they were formed back in 2007, the HeFi Quartet has come a long way. The band from Poland made their way into the city to put out a spectacular jazz performance for music lovers in the city.

We chat with Leszek Hefi Wisniowski, Dominik Wania, Maciek Adamczak and Bartek Staromiejski to know more about love for jazz, thoughts on the current music scene in the city, who they wish to collaborate with, and more.

Music is the way for them to transfer to another dimension. “I realised that in order to play my own music, I needed my own group. That’s how the quartet came to be,” says Leszek, the flutist and founder of the band who was influenced by great names such as Pink Floyd, Hubert Laws, Hariprasad Chaurisiya and more! As for their inspirations, the band is inspired by every sound around them!

“From noise in the streets of Bengaluru to the music of other artistes which we often analyse and process into our own language, everything is oddly inspiring to us,” Dominic, the keyboardist pitches in thoughtfully. “Listening to and experiencing the music around us, helps us get a better understanding of the world,” adds Leszek.

The quartet is planning on organising a few concerts in India soon and has hopes to collaborate with maestros like Giridhar Udupa and Pramath Kiran from Bengaluru. Taking their job very seriously, Maciek, the bassist opines, “For us, the concert itself is a ritual. From the very first sounds we reach another dimension of consciousness, which unfortunately disappears soon after the concert. And we are human beings too, we make a lot of mistakes, but any time they happen, we try to treat them creatively. Without mistakes my music would be too repetitive.”

Before signing off, we are inquisitive to know their thoughts on the jazz music scene in namma city! “Frankly speaking we do not know much about the music scene from Bengaluru. But the musicians who happened to play jazz like Giridhar Udupa and Pramath Kiran are excellent,” Leszek says conclusively.
