Rapper girl rocks capital city

14-year-old Aditi Nair, who performs both rap songs and Carnatic vocal concert with élan, has gained entry to the Indian Book of Records.

Female music prodigies are not new to Malayalam. Joining the list of child prodigies like Sujatha Mohan, Rajalakshmy, Vaikom Vijayalakshmi and Shreya Jayadeep is Aditi Nair, a 14-year-old rapper from Thiruvananthapuram who has recently made her way to the Indian Book of Records as the Rising Music Sensation.

Having lend voice to and composed several songs, Alka successfully runs a YouTube channel and has been initiated to the world of Carnatic music from a tender age. “My mother says I used to hum songs and catch tunes well even when I was around one-and-a-half-years old. That’s how my musical journey started,” recalls Aditi, who started composing songs since the age of six.

She was just eight when her first original ‘Boom Boom click’ was released. Its video version hit YouTube four years later, earning over 6,000 views. The orchestration of the song was done by Ashwin Johnson. But what shot Aditi to fame was her tryst with rap music.

“I was attracted to rap music when I was 11 and since then, I have been composing rap songs,” adds Aditi, whose first rap song Feel Free to Dream had 25 national and international languages incorporated in it. On her YouTube channel Aditi official, she releases her hip hop and EDM attempts. Her originals Everybody Goes and Freedom Bird have been nominated for awards at various film festivals in and outside the country.

A student of Kendriya Vidyalaya AFS Akkulam, Aditi finds it hard to manage both studies and music is hard. “But I still do it because my parents, teachers and friends are very supportive,” says Aditi, who along with pursuing her music dreams, hopes to make a career in sound engineering.

Already a popular performer at music concerts, she has rendered songs for many advertisements and has won several accolades, including the runner-up position in the Kendriya Vidyalaya Nationals, and now, the Rising Music Sensation in the Indian Book of Records.
Apart from music, Aditi engages in portrait drawing and photography. Now, she is preparing for a music concert in Pune coming up in October.
