LIGHT' at the end of the tunnel

A big gig and a debut album in the pipeline Dark Light has quite a lot going for them. We get chatty with the city band for more.

Bengaluru psychedelic rock band Dark Light derives inspiration from myriad musical influences. But, as much as the diversity is celebrated within the progressive rock band, the five members converge as ‘one voice’ whenever they perform on stage. Four years into the music scene, and the band is certain that their evolution has been massive and is an on-going process. With a debut album on the cards early next year and a few interesting gigs, it’s a packed season for the team. We get chatty with the band, just as they are all set to perform a tribute to Pink Floyd on December 28.

“We've grown as musicians in the past four years. Playing together has taught us many things about each other and the music we create. Music for that matter is constantly evolving. But, we are tighter as a unit now and more spontaneous with our compositions,” shares Mohammed Uvais, guitarist of the band. With Pink Floyd being one of bands whose music they’ve ardently followed, it is little surprise that a tribute to one of the most revered English rock bands is on the cards. “ We are playing a tribute gig to Pink Floyd. People who’ve been listening to us are aware how the band has been one of our major influences. We really enjoy covering their songs and hope the audience does as well. There’s this connect which every rock music fanatic will get, and we hope to re-create that,” reveals Jose Xavier, the vocalist.

The band encomprises Anand Pilakkat on the keyboard, Mohammed Uvais on the guitar, Jose Xavier on the vocals, Siddharth Manoharan on drums and Kaushik Kumar bass. It is the differences that bring a unique streak to a team project. And Dark Light vouches by how the diversity and the differences in each member’s music influences have helped them grow. “We have a diverse set of influences. Everything from classic rock, blues, jazz, classical music, metal, film scores to pop music has at some point influenced the music we create. It’s a great thing, actually. Diversity of influences greatly enriches our music,” states Anand Pilakkat, the keyboardist.

Passionate about the music that they play, Dark Light has found enough takers in the city for their music. “We have other careers to fall back on. But we are very serious about music and would love to be full time musicians. Anything and everything about music inspires and ignites a fire within us. Our love for the kind of music we play, cinema, literature and life in general is something we would like to make a substantial part of our lives.”

Taking the usual route, this city band will also be out with their all-new album soon. “ We will be releasing our debut album in 2018. We are currently working on our album comprising eight tracks. We are getting it recorded at Astral Studios Bengaluru. We wouldn’t want to reveal a lot about it, and would rather have the quality of our music do the talking. The focus at present is on the upcoming gig and we are multi-tasking it with several other interesting projects,” concludes Mohammed Uvais.
