Korean Pop music comes to town!

A revival of interest in Korean pop culture has led to the popularity of their music, soaps and TV shows in the city.

The Korean wave has hit the country! From television series to soap operas and music across all genres, the Korean entertainment scene has become quite a hit with youngsters all over the world.

A number of Hollywood celebrities like Emma Stone, Lorde, Lady Gaga and even Pharrel Williams have confessed their love for Korean Pop music! And the youth of namma ooru are not far behind. Many of them are already hooked to the popular dramas, variety shows and catchy music!

Currently, Korea seems to be the epicenter of pop culture. Be it television series, reality tv, or even music, the culture seems to have gained it’s own identity. “K-Pop is so much more than Gangnam style,” establishes Tanvi Seth.

“It’s also quite similar to American pop culture but with a larger amount of effort put in,” says the 22-year-old Super Junior fan from the city. “With Korean stars, you can see their genuineness, hard work and raw talent through their performances of the artistes, be it music, dance or acting. They are also more open to experimenting with sounds and fresher concepts in terms of shows,” says Tanvi, about K-Pop dramas that are known to have intriguing plot twists and strong foundations.

Though K-Pop is much loved and appreciated around the world, there is a certain stigma attached to it. “People aren’t very open to the concept here because they think it’s all about skinny boys and girls wearing make up and dancing. But art is so much more than that. Just because you don’t understand the lyrics and a language, the entire concept shouldn’t be shot down,” says Evania Christine, a corporate employee defensively.

“Their music is so much more than the lyrics. People shoot it down and ridicule it saying they don’t understand the lyrics but their music stays with you long after you’ve heard it, irrespective of whether you understand the lyrics or not,” comments the 24-year-old Shinee fan.

Not only in the world of music and television shows, the fashion too seems to have taken over, but is rarely appreciated according to fans. “Their fashion choices are ten steps ahead of the world. A number of recent styles, like using the Kimono as a shrug, distressed outfits, and even hair and make up trends all start from there and then move to the bigger countries and become popular. Big Bang, a famous K-Pop band has been appreciated for their fashion choices and seem to be paving the way for men’s fashion all over the world!” says Gitika Saraiya, a fashionista and entrepreneur from the city. So is it time for us to move on from saas-bahu serials to Korean shows? Namma youth certainly think so!
