Playing the Iret' way

Iret, a set of music quality enhancers created by Rethin Silvester and his team, is a hit among musicians.

In most cases, a musician is judged by the quality of music he or she produces. Be it a live performance on stage or a music album, no matter how talented the artist be, the entire process of music composition and performance may come into question if the sound quality takes a nosedive.

The quality of the musical instrument along with other sound enhancements used matter when it comes to bringing out top-notch compositions. That is when Iret, created by Rethin Silvester and team comes into picture. A first of its kind handmade instrument made Iret Guitar Enhancements the country’s first acoustic tech start-up.

So, what is the story behind Iret? “Iret, as we have named it are guitar effect pedals or effect units. These electronic devices, in general, alter the sound of a musical instrument,” explains Rethin. These pedals which are commonly referred to as stompboxes are kept on the floor or in a pedal board and are operated by the user’s feet.

For Rethin, who is also a guitarist, the idea to build such a device was a necessity. “Initially, it started as a personal requirement. Being an electronic engineering student, I decided to build it for myself. I received positive response from my collegemates after they heard me use it. Soon I started making these pedals and was selling them online. It happened when I was pursuing B. Tech at Nehru College in the year 2011-12,” he says.

Rethin says he was least certain about the future of these stompboxes. "But then, I started taking them around to local musicians for their feedback, which brought out positive responses."
