Cast: Yashas, Nimika Rathnakar, Mandya Ramesh, Aruna Balaraj, Ramesh Paint

Bored of watching movies with typical commercial intent, and seeking for a ‘reel’ change. Then, Ramadhanya is a film which is made with the clear intention of spreading a timeless message from the past whose relevance remains true for all ages. Based on the works of the great 15th century poet, philosopher, musician and composer Kanakadasa, the movie is a glimpse of his famous work — Ramadhanya charitre.

While the movie falls short on cinematic and technical aspects, its strength lies in the script which talks about class and caste system which is depicted through the subplot.

This one is strictly not for those who are looking out for fun and entertainment. It requires patience along with a passion for history and philosophy for a meaningful watch.

As the movie is based on the great Kanakadasa, the film has two different sub plots along with the main storylone running in the present era. One highlights the life of the saint, and on how he ended up becoming Kanakadasa from Thimmappa, who was once a warrior.

The sub plot— Ramadhanya is the actual essence of this movie. Here, Kanakadasa himself presents the story around the effects of class and caste system with the fine example of paddy and ragi, the millets’ tug of war over who supremancy between the two.

Despite fine performances from the lead characters — Yashas who dons multiple roles including the impressive Nimika who makes her debut, also seen in multiple roles, the movie does not succeed in depicting the history on the big screen.

Most of what the movie intends to show the audience is well documented, and there is nothing new which is another negative. However, it could be an educative picture for those who are unaware of the saint’s work and his greater message for society.
