Raajakumara movie review: Power saves the day

A perfect example of too many cooks spoiling the broth', the film has too many things, including a long list of stars.

The director of Mr and Mrs Ramachari, which set a new record at the box office had the perfect and most powerful tool to strike back — his second venture — Raajakumara.

Unfortunately, apart from Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar’s charming onscreen presence and the heavily-loaded family sentiment, the film proves to be an average outing. A perfect example of ‘too many cooks spoiling the broth’, the film has too many things, including a long list of stars.

It starts with a game of cricket, a fight and patriotism. A rich NRI Kannada family goes sightseeing at Australia’s famed tourist spots, and a bit of Salsa and falling in love ensues before a tragic plane crash where the protagonist’s entire family dies. All of this, including the hero who finds out that he is an orphan, is the first part of the story.

If that was not enough, the director has much more in store in the second half. Family values take centre stage where the protagonist fights to clear his deceased father’s name in a scam. His concern for his deserted aged parents in an old age home or the orphanage are rife with high emotion.

The director’s take on a direct reference to Puneeth Rajkumar’s long-drawn career on several occasions is overdone and while it might impress Power fans, the rest are perplexed. It is Puneeth who actually saves the day in Raajakumara.

In an attempt to draw family audiences, the director has mashed up all those feel good factors, pumped with emotion, in excess, forcing audiences to shed tears. Yes, there are some moments for the sensitive minded to cry their hearts out, but even those tears soon dry out in the frequent attempts of this tear jerker.

The director barely manages to pull it off in his attempt to please all by offering something for everyone, especially Puneeth’s large fan following. If family sentiment is your preferred mode of entertainment, then Raajakumara will not disappoint you. It also comes with the usual bonus for fans — Puneeth dancing to a special number.
