Metro movie review: Hard-hitting thriller with a refreshing plot

The director Anand Shankar has extensively detailed these urban crimes to a new level.

Director: Anand Shankar
Cast: Shirish Saravanan, Bobby Simha, Senrayan

Metro was in the news recently after the movie was denied a censor as they felt it is unfit for censorship. However, the film got a certification from the revising committee and with a few cuts, it was released with an A Certificate.

Metro is inspired by real life incidents of chain snatching in the city and even goes a step further by explaining the modus operandi of these organized crimes. The movie opens with a journo Arivazhagan (Shirish Saravanan) and his photographer friend (Senrayan) who kidnaps a chain snatcher and beats him black and blue to extract the truth from him about the chain snatching mafia in the city. He has a reason behind his act. Cut to past, we see Arivu belongs to a happy family with his dad (Raja), a retired cop and mother (Thulasi), a housewife with younger brother Madhi (Sathya), and a college student.

Madhi has a girlfriend who wants to live a comfy life. She insists that Madhi owns a KTM bike, expensive phone and things of that nature. Frustrated with the fact that his family could not afford to buy them, he gets entangled into the bad web of criminals headed by Guna (Bobby Simha in a negative role) and in order to get easy money agrees to commit a crime. Meanwhile, Arivu’s mom gets murdered by a chain snatcher and shattered by the incident, he sets out to catch the criminal gang. All hell breaks when he finally nabs the culprit.

The director has extensively detailed these urban crimes to a new level. The movie gives us the info about how gold moves through the black market, how these criminals plan their method of operation, why they target women who tie their hair on top, and how their psyche works in a thorough fashion.

Debutant Shirish looks good. He is underplayed in the film but nonetheless shines with the limited dialogues accorded to him. Senrayan does a neat job except for his overdoing act at times. Sathya is just about adequate despite given a meaty role. It is Bobby Simha who steals the show with his riveting performance. Raja and Thulasi do their bit well. Uthayakumar’s cinematography is the biggest plus to the movie and Johan’s music helps the proceedings. Too much of violence disturbs. There are no romantic interludes though actress Maya has been roped in as the heroine.

Metro is a hard-hitting thriller with a fresh plot made without commercial compromises and would go well with audiences who like to watch world movies.
