Capmaari movie review: A tedious affair

SAC has said this will be his last movie behind the megaphone. An unmemorable departure to say the least!

Director: SA Chandrashekar

Cast: Jai, Vaibhavi, Athulya

Capmaari is the 70th directorial venture of SA Chandrashekar, known for his sensitive social based themes. But this time around, SAC has tried his hands on an adult content genre.

Jai (Jai- half the time his name is pronounced as ‘Vijay’) , is an IT guy, who is a happy go lucky person. He has a weakness for beer. And after getting drunk on a few bottles, he hits up a woman Jenny (Vaibhavi Sandilya) on a train journey and ends up marrying her. And Jai repeats the same act with Varsha (Atulya Ravi) his colleague who is crazy after him after both of them gulp few beers. Typical of Tamil cinema, with one-night stand, Varsha gets pregnant. She moves bag and baggage to Jai’s house. Now, he has to lead a life with two women, who supposedly ‘love’ him.

There’s nothing wrong in making an adult content movie. But in the pretext of portraying modern-day youth (!) and his romance, the film is full of crass comedy, sleazy double entenders, and liberal skin show of both the heroines. MeToo movement has also been taken a dig. By design, the characters are devoid of morals and it doesn’t work for the movie. Towards the end, we get a social message—consumption of alcohol is not only injurious to health but also “life”.
