Hitting the right notes

Vishwajith is the man behind the signature tunes of many Malayalam TV channels.

Almost every prominent Malayalam channel has a signature tune, which makes it popular among the public. The man who has created most of these tunes is Vishwajith. He has also composed the title songs for various popular TV shows. Even though he started at the age of 22, singing tracks for music composers like M.G. Radhakrishnan and Ramesh Narayan, it was in 2002, years after being in the industry that director Shyamaprasad, after listening to Vishwajith’s music album, made one of the songs of the album into the title score of a television serial.

“Since then there was no looking back. It was in 2006 that I got a chance to make music for the movie Oraal directed by Kuku Surendran. The movie was not a commercial hit but I started getting more offers,” he says, elaborating about his entry into the Malayalam film industry. Vishwajith has composed songs for many Malayalam movies like Veeralippattu, Teenz, Race, Rudra Simhasanam, Fukri, Captain and Vaelakariayalum Neeyenmohavali to name a few.

He has also composed music for the National Award-winning movie Byari, which he considers as one of his major achievements. Apart from movies like Shine Tom Chacko-starrer Tami, and a movie on late Nandakumar Kavil’s script, Vishwajith is also making music for an upcoming Marathi film. Talking more about it, he says, “It is the debut directorial venture of prominent ad film maker Sijo Rocky. The movie is in Marathi and therefore, the whole dimension is very new to me. But I guess it will be fun to work on something new.”

Sharing his thoughts about the Malayalam film and music industry, Vishwajith is of the opinion that he doesn’t feel there is tight competition. However, he adds it is the responsibility of every music director to be well-versed with the changing trends. “The entire scenario has changed and as music directors, we must be well-equipped to deliver what the director wants. But unfortunately with many movies getting released every week, the life of every song is small. It depends on your talent, if you can create a song that stays in the audience's minds. Competition has no role there. If the song you made is good, people will accept it or else there are many options available,” he concludes.
