Suriya's tryst with Thaanaa Serndha Koottam

Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the film's plot is borrowed from the Bollywood film Special 26.

Suriya is aware of his fan base in Kerala and that is the reason why he makes it a point to visit Kerala whenever a film of his releases. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (TSK) is gearing up for a Pongal release, which will see him pairing up with Malayali girl Keerthy Suresh. Suriya was here in Kochi to talk about his film. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the film’s plot is borrowed from the Bollywood film Special 26.

Suriya reveals that he was initially apprehensive about taking on a script based on another film. He says, “It was in Vizag, while shooting for Singham 3 that producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja came up with the proposal and Vignesh came to see me with the script of TSK. Singham 3 director Hari sir came to know that Vignesh was coming and told me to take up the role.”

After a pause, Suriya continues, “I reminded him that I had not yet listened to the script, but it stuck in my mind that Hari was batting for Vignesh.” The same thing happened at home too and Suriya laughingly mentions that his family, sister, friends and brother Karthi too asked him to work with Vignesh. Suriya chose to listen to the script first and continues, “I was not over-enthusiastic because I had not done a remake in a long time, but the minute Vignesh started narrating the film, I realised he had his own way of handling the characters and setting the mood and it was very different from the original. He had this quirkiness and surprise to his story that pulled me.”

Vignesh also took Suriya to a local tea shop and said “life starts from here”. “That cup of tea reminded me of the time when life was simpler and I felt I had gone back to my roots,” adds Suriya.

The film is set against a colorful backdrop of dance and music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The song Sodakku... from the film has already become a chart-buster. Suriya heaps accolades on his co-stars Senthil, Ramya Krishnan and Keerthy. But it is the director Vignesh who surprised him when he demanded and extracted a certain way of modulation and speech from Suriya.

Asked about Rajinikanth joining politics, Suriya chose to say, “Both Rajini sir and Kamal sir have strong opinions and a lot of experience. They have seen other actors getting into politics and have seen the results firsthand. So they are not doing it out of excitement. I feel both of them have this inner calling, think deeply for society and are serious about it. I will support them in whatever way I can.”

Asked if he himself would like to foray into politics, Suriya negates and answers that he is happy doing his bit for society through his Agaram Foundation. A question on Jyothika has to be asked and he answers, “Jo is excited to join Mani Ratnam’s film soon.”

Though Suriya says he would like to act in Mollywood, he also revealed his reasons for sticking to Kollywood, “I believe in emoting in the language which I know to be true to the craft. I am not multi-talented and cannot speak too many languages, which is one of my shortcomings. So I don’t want to jump into projects in other languages.”
