200 and still going strong!

The actor admits that while his dad Sivaji worked really hard and struggled to bag films, he got offers on a golden platter.

Starting his career with Sangili alongside his dad, the late thespian Sivaji Ganesan, actor Prabhu has come a long way. He has reached his 200th milestone flick Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum (MKMP) in Amudeshwar’s direction. Prabhu, whose entry into tinsel town was accidental, says he wants to embody powerful villainous characters, and talks to DC about his journey in Tamil cinema.

“I studied in Bengaluru and when I came back to Chennai, I was chauffeuring my dad to studios for his shoots. I never had the intension of donning the greasepaint. But those who saw me used to ask if I was interested in acting. CV Rajendhran sir was one among them who forced me into acting and introduced me in Sangili alongside appa, in 1982. I can’t forget the first day of the shoot, as I received a garland and a congratulatory message from yet another legend-MGR. Also, I still keep my first salary cheque of '5,000 with me,” reminisces Prabhu.

The actor admits that while his dad Sivaji worked really hard and struggled to bag films, he got offers on a golden platter. He is happy that he has acted in all south Indian languages, and some of his films like Sirai Chaalai was dubbed as Kala Pani in Bollywood.

“I did not go for any acting classes, but all I did was to learn everything from appa during his shoots, and from his films. Among the projects I have worked in, my favourites are Agni Natchathiram, Chinna Thambi, En Thangachi Padichavae, Manasukkul Matthapu, Rajakumaran and Chandramukhi,” he reveals.

On MKMP, he says, “I play Kalidas’s dad in the movie. My nephew, Dusshyanth, has produced it. Having played hero and supporting roles, my longtime wish is to essay a powerful villain. But, I think seeing my ‘baby-like’ face, filmmakers are apprehensive to approach me for negative roles (laughs).” The versatile actor says he is yet to find a suitable subject to share the screen with his son Vikram Prabhu. “Waiting for the right script,” he concludes.
