Filmmaker Thiya, who won the Best Director award for the Naalaya Iyakkunar series, is all set to debut with a full-fledged comedy film titled Kanna Pinna — in which he also dons the greasepaint, and is paired opposite Vanmam fame Anjali Rao. However, at the audio launch in the city, filmmaker/actor and producer Cheran, after talking about the film, brought another issue to light — lashing out against the Sri Lankan Tamils who were responsible for bringing out pirated DVDs of new films.
Reacting sharply on the plight of producers today, he said, “Barring very few films like Kabali which give rich dividends, most of the producers are facing umpteen problems and are losing in crores. Their future is bleak. Piracy should be curbed, and revenue should be secured through official sources. Our anti-piracy laws are not stringent.” He adds, “I came to know that it was Sri Lankan Tamils who indulge in online leaks by releasing new films in an illegal manner. The film fraternity as such has raised its voice in favour of Sri Lankan Tamils on several occasions. Coming to think of it, I feel ashamed to have supported those who eat away our money and push us to penury.”
