Tinsel town most secure place for women: Rithika Srinivas

Rithika has a comedy horror movie and two Malayalam films in her kitty at the moment.

The film industry is the safest place to work in, says actress Rithika Srinivas, who is known for her power packed supporting roles, including her scheming villain role in Vazhakku En 18/9. She had bagged a coveted role in Jayam Ravi starrer Tik Tik Tik, said to be the first space film in India, directed by Sakthi Soundarrajan, where she plays the Lt General. The officer of that rank is supposed to be a key character in the space station’s top cadre and the role had initially gone to a top yesteryear actress.

“Filmmakers would never prefer a female artiste and would pitch in a male actor for the role I essay in Tik Tik Tik. It was a path breaking character for me and thanks to director Sakthi for the trust he placed in me to give me the role.”

The pretty actress adds, “We are a group people who work in space station and try to save the Earth from being destroyed. I am one of the decision makers in the group. And incidentally, my screen name is also Rithika, and it feels nice while working. But I am not allowed to speak anything more as it would give away the crux of the story (smiles).”

We hear that the makers approached a big actress for this role. “True! Probably, it didn’t work out. When Sakthi sir approached me, he said, ‘I have watched your movie Nimirndhu Nil and Mass. There’s some exclusivity about you and the roles you choose. You stand out. That’s why I opted for you’. That was the biggest compliment an actress could ever get,” she said.

On her preparations for the role, she said, “I liked ‘Nagma’ in Citizen film — her body language etc and watched a few videos of similar roles done by Angelina Jolie etc. But honestly, the moment you put on the robe on the sets, everything turns magical. It gave me the kind of looks, stiffness, and sharpness (laughs). Apparently, I lost 6 kilos with strict diet and hitting the gym.”

Talking about Jayam Ravi, the bubbly actress says that more than a co-star, Ravi is like a family to her. “This is my second film with Ravi. His wife Aarthi, kids and his dad Mohanji and brother Raja are like a family to me. And when we worked for the Tamil and Telugu versions of Nimirndhu Nil, we had stayed in the same place and shot for the film. I see him more as a close friend than a hero. However, his choice of experimenting with movies amazes me. I am sure no big hero would dare to touch a genre like this (Tik Tik Tik).”

Coming to the topic of the controversial casting couch, she says, “Frankly speaking, I haven’t come across such a situation. I feel it is not fair to generalise things like the Telugu actress does. I am extremely happy being part of tinsel town, which I consider is the most secure place to work in.”
