A new entry into tinsel town

A popular political party head's grandson Gunanidhi talks about his debut into the world of films!

Politics and cinema always go hand in hand in Tamil Nadu. It’s not a new phenomenon that scions from political families make their entry into cinema as a stepping stone to reach the masses. Udhayanidhi Stalin, Durai Dayanidhi and a few others are in the films now. The latest to join is PMK leader Dr Ramadoss’ grandson Dr Gunanidhi who makes his foray into tinsel town. A trained theater artist, Gunanidhi is debuting with an internet movie titled A Stroke of Dissonance, which has only one character. He speaks to DC in an interview.

“Right from a very young age, I was passionate about films and from the age of 10, I was attached to a drama troupe from Villupuram who used to stage street dramas. Most of them would be about social issues and an effort to bring awareness. Later I joined ‘Theater Lab’ and learnt dramatics professionally. My first stage play was Romeo Juliet which was well received,” Gunanidhi opens up.

Since, he was studious and coming from a family of doctors, Gunanidhi joined medical college and completed his degree in medicine. “I am also practicing simultaneously,” he tells us with a smile.

Coming to A Stroke of Dissonance, which is directed by Navakanth, he says, “I am just starting with a short film to test the waters. It’s a very challenging role.

There’s only one character in the whole of 30 minutes and I play the role of a violinist. The entire story unfolds in a single room. It’s an experimental film which has been made especially for international film festivals.”

Elaborating more about the challenges he had in playing the role, he says, “It’s the struggle of a violinist. He goes through a lot of things in his mind. So, I have to perform a gamut of expressions. At the same, time the character is subtle. I have to match the actual composition played by the German violinist, Holger Jetter. ”

When asked about the support of his family in his first venture, he responds, “Oh, they are too supportive of me joining films! Thatha said, ‘I have been watching your passion right for a long time now. Please pursue your dreams.”

Though Gunanidhi did not speak about his debut film, our close sources reveal that he will be entering the big screen soon with a movie which is touted to be directed by Arunraja Kamaraj.
