Comedian pleads for advance bail in assault case

Santhanam has approached the Madras high court seeking anticipatory bail.

Chennai: Apprehending arrest in connection with an assault case, popular film comedian Santhanam has approached the Madras high court seeking anticipatory bail. Santhanam submitted that he apprehended arrest at the hands of Valasaravakkam police for the alleged offence under section 294 (b), 324 and 506 (i) of IPC. The occurrence was said to have taken place on October 9 and the counter complaint filed by him was registered against the de facto complainant and his associates for offences under section 294 (b) and 506 (i) IPC, he added.

Santhanam said the case of the prosecution was that one Shanmugasundaram lodged a complaint against him stating that he was attacked by Santhanam and it was further alleged that he was threatened with dire consequences. Hence, the police registered a case against him (Santhanam). The allegations levelled in the complaint were false and concocted. The complainant received money for constructing a building and the complainant did not keep his word. The builder did not come forward to return the amount to him.

On October 9, the builder invited him over the phone for settlement talks. Believing his word, he met the builder in his office. When the settlement talks were going on, all of a sudden, the builder and his associates attacked him. Santhanam lodged a complaint against the builder and his associates before the Valasaravakkam police and the same was registered. In order to escape from his liability, the builder had created a scenario and lodged a false complaint, the actor added.

Santhanam booked under 3 sections:

A day after Tamil actor Santhanam and a city based builder exchanged blows at the latter’s office in Valasaravakkam over a sour financial deal, police booked the actor under three IPC sections. Police investigations reveal that the actor had plans to construct a shopping complex in Kundrathur and had paid an advance of over '2 crore to the builder, Shanmugasundaram.

However, the final deal did not get through and the contract was cancelled. The realtor kept on dodging the actor without returning the advance after which Santhanam and his manager Ramesh went to the builder’s office in Valasaravakkam. A verbal duel ensued and it soon escalated into a brawl with both parties exchanging blows. The realtor’s friend, Prem Anand, an advocate who attempted to pacify them, was also allegedly manhandled, following which the advocate and Shanmugasundaram filed a complaint at Valasaravakkam police station.

Some BJP cadres staged a protest outside the Valasaravakkam police station, demanding action against the actor. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against the actor under three sections IPC 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 b (recites or utters any obscene words or songs near public place) and 506(1) IPC (punishment for criminal intimidation). Further investigations are on.
