Uma Devi aims for a hat-trick with Kaala

The lyricist talks about her success in the industry.

Female lyricists are a rarity in Tamil cinema, with the exception of ace lyric writer Thamarai. Now, Uma Devi, who came to limelight with her debut song Naan Nee Naamm Vaazahve in Karthi’s Madras, has consolidated her position, when she penned two songs Maayanadhi and Veera Thurandhara for Rajinikanth’s Kabali, which became chartbusters.

Presently, Uma Devi is writing lyrics for top three heroines namely Nayanthara, Trisha and Jyothika for their upcoming flicks. Speaking about her experiences, Uma says, “It is just a coincidence that I am penning the lyrics for Nayan’s Aramm, Jyothika’s Magalir Mattum and Trisha’s 96 and yes I am immensely happy. Among these, MM’s lyric video of the song Adi Vaadi Thimira in Ghibran’s composition has been watched by more than 1 crore people. Similarly, Pudhu Varalaare Puranaanure and Thoranam Aayiram from Aramm are being received well.”

The young lyricist reveals that many congratulated her for her command over the Tamil language and the freshness in her lines. “I am teaming up with my mentor, director Ranjith, for the third time in the Superstar film Kaala. Hope these songs would also be lapped up by Tamil audiences, who are receptive to new ideas,” she tells on an optimistic note.
