Sangamithra all set to dazzle at Cannes!

The period epic starring Shruti Haasan in the titular role will be unveiled at the opening night of the 70th Cannes Film Festival next week.

Taking a cue from the unprecedented worldwide fanfare of Baahubali, yet another producer and filmmaker from the south is following suit to garner global attention. Yes, we are talking about director Sundar C’s trilingual magnum opus, Sangamithra. Set in the eighth century AD, with Shruti Haasan in the titular role and Arya and Jayam Ravi as the male protagonists, the film will be unveiled on the opening night at the prestigious 70th Cannes Film Festival on May 18!
The entire cast and crew, including Sundar, Arya, Jayam Ravi, Shruti, producers Narayanan Ramasamy and Hema Rukmani from Thenandal Studios and production designer Sabu Cyril (post his Baahubali stint), will be present on the occasion.

Enthusiastic about his magnum opus being showcased at Cannes, director Sundar C says, “It’s an honour to be unveiling Sangamithra at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival with my team. This is the most special and challenging project in my career so far.”

Shruti Haasan, who has already started intense physical and combat training for the role of a warrior princess in the movie, says, “I’m so happy to be taking our film Sangamithra to an international audience via such a prestigious platform. We know that this is a story that will find a great connect with national and international viewers and we are so happy to have them as a part of our journey right from the beginning.”

Echoing similar views, Arya and Ravi said, “It’s a very special project for us and we all are looking forward to it. This is going to be a challenging journey! And getting global attention at Cannes, is a grand moment for us.”

To go with the present trend of sequels, producer Narayan Ramaswamy revealed that Sangamithra would be made in two parts. “It is exciting to make a period film in Tamil, the oldest language in the world. With its content and scale, we are making the flick in two parts,” he said.
