Kaala a hit, insists Wunderbar films

One report said while Ranjith's debut with Rajini, Kabali, had opened in 3,000 screens in the state, Kaala managed just 1,700 screens.

Chennai: Rubbishing reports that the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala has bombed, its production house Wunderbar Films on Saturday said the Pa Ranjith movie was indeed a blockbuster. Wunderbar Films, owned by the superstar's daughter Aishwarya and son-in-law Dhanush, tweeted, “We would like to dispel rumours run in few articles on #Kaala. Contrary to it, #Kaala is a successful and profitable project for Wunderbar Films and we thank Superstar for the opportunity given to us. We also thank the audience for the positive response given to the film”.

There have been media reports in recent days that Kaala had bombed at the box office and the movie had to make way for the later releases rather too early. Reports on social media also said Dhanush had agreed to pay Rs 40 crore to the distributors to make up for their losses due to poor turnout in the theatres.

However, there have also been reports that Kaala collected more than Rs 150 crore in the first three weeks, which probably made the Superstar the only actor to have three of his films gross over Rs 150 crore.

One report said while Ranjith’s debut with Rajini, Kabali, had opened in 3,000 screens in the state, Kaala managed just 1,700 screens. And even then, the sale of tickets did not match the huge hype the film had created while in the making. Some said that Rajini’s statements on political entry and his criticism of the Thoothukudi violence could have angered some sections of his diehard fans.

While these leftist elements got upset over his Thoothukudi anger, AIADMK seniors and State Ministers repeatedly poked fun at Rajinikanth’s political ambitions and said he (and his friend-turned competitor Kamal Haasan) would soon disappear into oblivion if they nursed ambitions to emulate MGR to make big in politics taking advantage of their cine glamour.
