Mohan Raja hails his protégée

Besides being a box-office hit in Malaysia, the movie also got the credit of being the first Malaysian-Tamil mainstream film.

Puvanendhran, who has assisted filmmakers Mohan Raja and Nesan in films like Thillalangadi, Velayudham and Jilla, turned independent with a Malaysian-Tamil movie Maravan.

Besides being a box-office hit in Malaysia, the movie also got the credit of being the first Malaysian-Tamil mainstream film — and made it to several events, winning awards at international film festivals in New York and Dhaka.

It also got selected for the semifinals in a competitive section at the Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne, and was screened at the likes of the Barcelona Planet Film Festival, Russian International Film Festival, Singapore World International Film Festival, and Hong Kong World International Film Festival.

Recently, it was screened exclusively for a set of press and celebrities in Chennai. Speaking at the screening, Mohan Raja said, “Maravan is one of the best Malaysian-Tamil films, which I have watched in the recent past. I am not saying this because Puvanendhran was my assistant. He has done a great job in terms of screenplay and handling an international subject with high technical standards. I want him to come to K’town and make a Tamil film here soon!”
