Benedict Cumberbatch honoured as Sherlock tops BBC characters poll

\"I'm honoured to hear that my portrayal of Sherlock has been internationally recognised as viewers' favourite BBC TV character.\"

Mumbai: Benedict Cumberbatch feels 'honoured' as 'Sherlock' has topped the worldwide poll of most popular BBC television characters.

Cumberbatch said, "I'm honoured to hear that my portrayal of Sherlock has been internationally recognised as viewers' favourite BBC TV character," reports the Mirror.

Adding, "Who would have thought a high-functioning sociopath could be so popular with people all over the world?"

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth bagged the accolade, after having some stiff competition from the likes of Fawlty Towers' Basil Fawlty, the Doctor in ‘Doctor Who’ and Hyacinth Bucket.

The reports further said that the grand title came after BBC Worldwide surveyed more than 7,000 people, between the age of 18 to 64, from seven countries, including Australia, France, the U.S. and Japan, with almost 30 percent of them all backing Cumberbatch 's 'Sherlock.'

The 40-year-old actor also bagged top-prize for most memorable scene as Sherlock, for his fall to apparent death, at the end of the show's second series.
