I would like to direct my daughter: Shekhar Kapur

Kaveri is trained in Hindustani classical music, Western classical vocals, piano and guitar.

Daughter of celebrated filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and Suchitra Krishnamurthy, Kaveri Kapur is one of the youngest kids on block. Barely 16, she is already out with her third single, Again.

Kaveri is trained in Hindustani classical music, Western classical vocals, piano and guitar. The songstress is hoping to continue pursing this passion as long as she can. She says, “The feedback has been great. I look forward to doing whatever I love for as long as I can. I don’t consider myself to have famous; I don’t see it that way. In fact, I find it scary.”

Shekhar Kapur, who is known for his outstanding films like Masoom, Mr India, Bandit Queen, seems to be stunned at Kaveri’s work. “I am a little amazed when I saw the video I don’t quite understand where its coming from. Her lyrics and compositions are amazing. She is genius and she is gifted. She has done it all herself — I am taken aback,” the 71 year-old-said.

Her parents though want her to experiment with other mediums as well. So while her mother Suchitra wants Kaveri to try her hands into acting, Shekhar would love to direct his daughter. “If she would let me I would like to direct her…if she trusts me!” quips Shekhar. Kaveri, on her part, is aware of the pitfalls that come with working with one’s true blood. She notes, “It is easier to be directed by the people you don’t know. I know my dad — I know for a fact that it will be hard for him to criticise me if he directs me.”

However, Shekhar is critical about using the word “launch.” He says, “I find the word launch to be a bad word. She didn’t ask us when she wanted to become a musician. I don’t think she will ask us when she takes this decision. I will wait for the day when she tells us that this is exactly what she wants to do.” Suchitra reveals that Kaveri has received quite a few offers as well. She says, “I would like her to give it a try. Initially she was reluctant now she is open to it. She has also become more confident in front of the camera.” We would like to see that happening soon.
