The murder of a man by his sisters is indeed a terrifying incident (Sisters kill own brother for molesting, arrested, Feb. 15). How shocking to realise that a woman is not safe even under her own roof. The murdered P. Srinivas, the brother of Surekha, had committed a deadly sin. In these days no one is safe. In such a situation self-defence is the only option. Every crime has a lesson, and Surekha has indeed taught us a lesson.

Dowry laws
Highly qualified women and their parents are paying huge amounts as dowry even though it is an offence (Police told to get runaway techie, Feb. 13). It is also a fact that 70 to 80 per cent of all dowry cases are false. Moreover, the onus is on the accused person to establish his innocence, unlike in other criminal cases. Hence, I think that dowry harassment laws should be revised.

School terror
The murder of a teacher by a Class IX student was very unfortunate (Boy stabs Hindi teacher to death, Feb. 10). As a teacher, I was under immense pressure to discipline the children. Discipline meant a silent class. When there are 30-35 kids in a class, how can there be silence, unless there is fear? Education should not become a terror.

Faulty logic
Mr Jethmalani’s argument that the accused should be released on bail just because the size of the misappropriation is small compared to that of the 2G scandal does not seem to be strong (Jethmalani says Emaar is peanuts compared to 2G scam, Feb. 14). In that case most people facing theft charges would have to be freed.
