Ban gambling

Betting on animals is widespread in AP (MLA inaugurates cockfight, 25 held for betting, Jan. 15). This is not at all a healthy development. Gambling destroys lives, particularly that of the poor. There are many families that have lost everything through cockfights. It is alarming that ministers, MPs, MLAs, and senior officials are encouraging gambling by way of cockfights. The government must immediately stop this barbarous entertainment.

Age row
It was very sad to see the Army chief going to court on the date of birth issue. He knows very well that he became the chief based on his 1951 date of birth. Why did he not raise the issue then?

Rushdie’s visit
A person of Indian origin holding a PIO card can definitely visit India, and Rushdie is no exception (Centre won't stop Rushdie; visit doubtful, Jan. 18). Being a Muslim I definitely oppose Rushdie, and I would like to oppose his visit. Rushdie's comments have hurt Indian Muslims, and if his visit is allowed it would be nothing but rubbing salt on the wounds.

Kudos to disabled
Hats off to the disabled artists (State ignores quota for disabled, Jan. 18) who expressed their abilities while enacting the play Kurukshetra yudham using tricycles as chariots. They deserve empathy but not sympathy. The government's inaction in implementing reservations in promotions for the PHC category under the Disabled Act, 1995 is deplorable.
