July 30th, 2010

Hyderabad, July 29: The President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, said here today that Hindi and Urdu were not two different languages but “two aspects of the same thing.” He suggested the adoption of the Persian words in vogue in Urdu by Hindi and Sanskrit words in Hindi by Urdu. This, he said, would resolve the Hindi-Urdu question.

Indeed, he added, the question of language which gave rise to controversy now and then could be reso-lved by the languages adopting the popular words of each other.

The President was speaking at the “Aiwan-e-Urdu” which houses the Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu (a Urdu literary organisation). At the outset, the President spoke of the unity and oneness obtaining in India in spite of the diversity in respect of language, way of life, food habits and dress in different regions.
