The Congress high command has committed an irrevocable error by conceding to Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s demand for a separate Telangana. They appear to have taken a decision in a hurry. The TRS lost in the recent general elections and did not even dare to contest in the GHMC elections. It shows that people are not keen on a separate state. Only a handful of selfish politicians are behind this drama. The Centre should have taken appropriate steps instead of putting the people into such an unwarranted situation.

The Congress core committee’s decision seems to be based on the sentiments of Telangana agitators and other national parties. The national parties supporting Telangana have negligible or no representation in the state. The regional parties have been oblivious to the perception of their own MLAs and MPs on the issue. Otherwise there would not have been such a revolt following the announcement. Instead of imposing the decision unilaterally on the people of the state, the Central government should have gone for a consensus or a referendum on the Telangana issue.

When the whole world is moving towards globalisation, the people of Andhra Pradesh have chosen to remain local in their outlook. Political leadership determines the progress of a region and not natural resources. Leaders from all regions lack the vision to take the people forward. With their poor outlook, they are contributing to the backwardness of the state. If Telangana is ever formed, we hope that Hyderabad is saved from the perils of separatism.

The Congress took a thoughtless decision by agreeing to carve out a separate state. Even though the Telangana Rasthra Samiti fought the general elections promising a separate state and banking on Telangana sentiments, it could win only a handful of seats. The Congress is accountable to the people and must reveal why it took such a step. Otherwise, it will pay a heavy price for its folly.

If the Centre had agreed to carve out a separate state a few days earlier, it could have prevented suicides by several people and saved nearly Rs 300 crore due to the agitation. The Centre is solely responsible for the chaos in the state. It is taking the concerns of the state lightly.

Telangana was separate state for about 3 year before it was merged into Andhra forming Andhra Pradesh in 1956. Before independence Andhra was ruled by British and Telangana was ruled by Nizam, a Mulim king. Telangana did not develop under Muslim rule and Andhra developed under british rule. But Nizam developed Hyderabad city at the expense of the rural areas. Andhra rural areas were more developed but Andhra had no city that can be compared to Hyderabad. A state Re-organisation committee was established to study would be effects of merging two areas. It was called Fazlali commission. Fazlali was the head of the commission. The commission report was against the merger. It was argued in the report that Telangana will suffer and Andhra people will take advantage of less developed Telangana people. But Andhras had more money and more in number. They knew how to lobby. So the Centre agreed with them. So Andhra Pradesh was formed. Andhras agreed to play by the rules set by the Center to minimize discrimination againt Telangana people. But after formation of the new state they never followed those agreements. So Telangana people started to campagin for separate Telangana state. They have been fighting for over 50 years. Andhra lobby prevailed for all these year. BJP would have created Telangana when Vajpayee was prime minister. But his government was dependent upon Chandrababu Naidu's support for his party to have majority in Parliament. Then Rajashaker Reddy came to power. He too didn't let Mrs Gandhi declare Telangana. Now he is dead. There was less pressure on the Centre from Andhra lobby. So Centre agreed for a separate Telangana state. Andhra people have only one motive i.e. to exploit Telangana people and accumulate wealth. That is possible only if the state is not divided. That is not a good reason to keep the state united. So it will be divided.
